They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters.

Audio excerpt:

They found him in Ponta Pora, a pleasant little town in Brazil, on the border of Paraguay, in a land still known as the Frontier.

Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm’s offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

  3. Definitely need a sequel!!!!!

  4. Hi John

Yes this book, indeed, needs a sequel. Not a chance Eva turned on him….her parting “mind thoughts” were not even into that direction…..

I didnt realize this book came out in 1997. Its 2009……maybe a sequel is not in the cards……

I actually believed in her as a character….

  5. This book has to have a sequel. Everything was so well planned. It can’t end like that. They must meet up.

  6. Please write a sequel to The Partner. The ending is haunting since it doesn’t follow the direction of Eva’s character at all. It’s sad to think Patrick’s life will be lonely and unhappy after all he endured.

  7. Please write a sequel to The partner. All that planninig and Eva leaves Patrick. Come on.

  8. I too missed this original publication. I found this book at a library sale and bought all of the Grisham books I had not read. I read this book in 2 days. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write a sequel!!!! This definitely needs one. I have loved every book that Grisham has written (The Chamber being my least favorite) but I would say by far this is my favorite. PLEASE, AGAIN I ASK YOU, WRITE A SEQUEL TO THIS ONE!!! Eva can’t just disappear with the money. There has to be more.

  9. I agree, a sequel is needed. This was a fantastic book, kept me guessing throughout. The implications at the end did not match up with Eva’s character. Personally, I think that Stephano had something to do with Eva’s disappearance. I hope that a sequel gets written, though with how much time has passed, I doubt it.

  10. This is the first Grisham book I have read, and was great until the last page. It is also the last Grisham book I will read. I will not commit that much time to being so thoroughly disappointed again.

  11. I think there does need to be a sequel!!! Does he find Eva and realize his dreams of having a big family? I NEED TO KNOW! PLEASE WRITE A SEQUEL!!! 🙂

  12. Well I just got through reading this novel in two days. Great book looks like Pat will be doing some hunting with Pepper in the woods outside his mom’s house.
