Audio excerpt:

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst “cancer cluster” in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave readers unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

Politics has always been a dirty game.
Now justice is, too.

“The election of state Supreme Court judges is a real political hotbed issue right now,” Grisham said in an interview to Des Moines Register. “And these races have become just rotten with special-interest groups, cash and judges taking huge campaign donations from lawyers and parties with cases pending before the court.”

“It’s turned into a terrible system, and I hope to bring some attention to that issue.”

2 reviews for The Appeal

  1. The truth of all things within the legal system. The hopes, the letdowns, the sacrifices, the dreams, and ultimately the decision. Unlike most authors, Grisham gives you a real story. One that leads you in many different directions and doesn’t always deliver the expected. The blatant reality of this story leaves you lost in a world of defeat. But also, appreciation. True justice does not always prevail in every day life, why should it be depicted as so in a novel. Excellent read, as it is with any Grisham novel.

  2. just finished “the appeal” and as usual, an excellent read. grisham writes a tale that is impossible to untangle before reaching the end…and just as impossible to put the book down. the stories never get stale, and the charactors jump off the page.
