Just a couple of days after Terry McAuliffe officially announced his candidacy for Virginia governor, he descended on Charlottesville for a town hall meeting at Zocalo Restaurant. Ushered by local author John Grisham, McAuliffe sported his usual Mentos smile.
Grisham said he and his wife support McAuliffe because they say he modernized the party when he was chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Grisham also told that he thinks McAuliffe is the only Democrat who can defeat Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, the GOP nominee, in the fall.
“The race is on,” said Grisham. “We’ve got a great horse in the race, and it’s not going to be a quiet race. Not with Terry McAuliffe.”
Grisham and his wife donated $50,000 to McAuliffe’s campaign. They were also major supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) during last year’s campaign for the Democratic nomination for president. McAuliffe had served as the chairman of Clinton’s campaign.
